Here’s part of the vows that I really needed to consider that helped me work through the shame of being a Christian woman choosing divorce: “What God has brought together, let no [hu]man put asunder.” What brought you together? Was it lust? Guilt? Obligation? Fear? Those things are not of God. What is?
I heard the phrase “God hates divorce,” as a manipulation tactic, also. But, remember, that’s not the only thing He hates. See Isaiah 61 – He hates abuse, as well.
Do you remember Dante’s Inferno? I believe the 9th ring of hell was reserved for those who ‘damaged’ others’ souls, rather than those who took life and possessions from others. That tells me that abuse is considered (by Dante’s perception of hell /the Bible) to be the most heinous of all acts, as it damages (gives the abused the belief that they are damaged) other’s souls, which divides them from their relationship with God. That’s a lot worse than the ‘crime’ of divorce.
